Government and administration

Morocco is a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament. The 2011 constitution strengthened the role of the head of government and the parliament and recognised Amazigh as an official language.

The monarchy

The King is head of state, commander of the faithful and supreme commander of the armed forces. The Alaouite dynasty has ruled since the 17th century.

Parliament and government

Parliament has two chambers: the House of Representatives, elected directly, and the House of Councillors, representing regions, professional groups and trade unions. The head of government is appointed from the party that wins the most seats.

Territorial organisation

Morocco is divided into 12 regions. Each region is divided into prefectures (mainly urban areas) and provinces (mainly rural areas), which in turn consist of communes: urban and rural municipalities run by elected councils.

  • 12 regions, each with an elected regional council
  • Prefectures and provinces overseen by governors appointed by the King
  • Communes (municipalities) with elected councils and mayors
