Culture of Morocco

Craft, music, architecture, hospitality and language all carry the memory of Morocco forward. Customs vary between Amazigh villages, Arab-Andalusian cities and Saharan communities.

Craft and design

Zellige tilework, carved cedar, leather, brass, carpets, pottery and weaving are practised in workshops across the country. Fes, Marrakech, Safi and Tetouan are renowned for specific crafts.

Music and performance

Andalusian classical music, Gnawa spiritual music, Amazigh ahwash and ahidous, chaabi and rai are among the genres you can hear. The Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira draws international audiences.

Architecture

Riads and courtyards, minarets, madrasas, kasbahs and ksour illustrate the range from Andalusian to Saharan styles.

Hospitality and customs

Offering tea and food to guests is central. Greetings are warm, dress is generally modest, and Friday is the main day of congregational prayer.
